KATHMANDU: The 2,556th Buddha Jayanti is being celebrated today to commemorate the birthday, enlightenment and passing away of Gautama Buddha, thefounder of Buddhism.
Buddha was born, enlightened, and died on the full moon day in the month of Baishakh in Lumbini of Nepal 2,556 years ago.
Buddhists living at home and abroad are organising various rituals and programmes across the country to mark the Buddha Jayanti.
Buddha is worshiped as a god in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the South East Asian countries of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and Indonesia.
On the occasion, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has greeted all and said that the message of peace, non-violence and love, which lord Buddha spread 2,556 years ago are still relevant.
President Yadav expressed hope that the Buddha Jayanti will boost harmony and brotherhood among peoples.
