‘Contentious issues should be solved through referendum’

Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) Chairman Kamal Thapa urged the political parties to solve the contentious issues of the new constitution through referendum.
Addressing a program organised at Itahari on Saturday, RPP-N ChairmanThapa said that many controversial issues such as that of republican state, religious tolerance, monarchy, federalism, and so forth would be solved through referendum.
Thapa said that democracy was in jeopardy at the time. He warned thatthe political parties would have to pay dearly in the future if they do notconsider the sentiments and need of the people now.
Saying that RPP-N’s demands have been praised by many political parties, Thapa said, “The base of democracy has been faltering lately.”
Thapa claimed that the political parties’ exasperation over former King Gyanendra Shah’s concern over the situation of the country shows that the political parties feel threatened by him.
Furthermore, Thapa said that Nepal is going through the most difficult phase in its history because of increasing impunity. “No one can expect development in a nation where murderers, rapists, and kidnapers are pardoned,” said Thapa.
